How to import projects/videos/footages into Final Cut Pro X

Final Cut Pro X is one of the most popular editing software for Mac users. Compared with the previous version, FCP X is designed to support MXF video files from Canon, Sony and Panasonic as well as XAVC files from Sony F55/F5 series, which provides great convenience and flexibility for users by importing videos to FCP X from camera without log and transfer.

However, there still exist a lot of videos that can not be imported into Final Cut Pro X for that it is not the accepted file format by Final Cut Pro X, for example, AVCHD files from Canon XA series/Panasonic AG/Sony HDR, H.264 MOV from Nikon, etc. So how to transfer videos into Final Cut Pro X without rendering?

Import video files to Final Cut Pro 6/7/x

Step 1. Run the Final Cut Pro X

Install and launch the Final Cut Pro X and connect your camera to Mac with a USB cable and turn it on.

Step 2. Transfer video files from camera to Final Cut Pro X

Click "File" on main interface to follow "Import" and "Media". We can see Final Cut Pro X supports importing iMovie project, iMovie Event Library and camera.



Find your camera on top left sliding bar and hit Command to choose the clips you want to import.



Step 3. Create new event or add to existing event.

After confirming all the clips you want to import, click "Return" and freely choose to create a new event or add the video files to existing event.




Step 4. Edit video files in FCP X timeline

After clicking the “Import” button in the third step mentioned above, you’ll find the imported video files under “All Clips” item, and right click to follow “Open in Timeline” and you can edit them as you wish.
